In the early nineteen century the Zaminder & Distinguished families used to only organize Durga Puja. Participation of the common people has been in the form of visitors and didn’t have any option of organizing the Puja.
For them visiting the Durga Puja was a must and was reprimanded very strongly for their absence. The consequences could be even physical and harassment in front of public.
This feeling of being deprived promoted a group of 12 friends to start a baroari Durga Puja in the name of Nebutala barware Durga Puja.
In the year 1919. This small step looks very natural & simple in today’s time but at that time it was like being against an established system & process. It took a lot of courage & mental toughness of the youth of that time. As organizing a Durga Puja couldn’t be stopped so some people tried to hold on to Purohits (Priest) clan from performing Puja for Nebutala Baroari Durga Puja.
A gentleman came forward to take the initiative of performing the Durga Puja himself for Nebutala Baroari durga puja. This became the turning point of history. Without this small initiation we on 91st year of their Durga Puja couldn’t got an opportunity to share this story of true believe & courage.
In 1919 first time it was celebrated by the people Bagbazar at Sarkar-House, 55,Baghbazar Street at the junction of Nebubagan Lane and Bagbazar Street.
The Durga Puja was the representation of the fight between the good & evil. Devi Durga have been synonym of motherland and ashur (demon) was the British rulers. The people expressed their share of wish for freedom through Durga Puja.
A sound health & mind is always an asset and necessity for a struggle against the British rulers. To encourage that the Nebutala Baroari durga puja started organize Birashtami a program to display yoga & body building on Maha Ashtami. In this the participants displayed knife & stick play also. This noble effort was also very well accepted in the society, to support their cause renowned body builder Rama murti of that time performed on 1923 in the same event.
In 1924 it was shifted at the junction of Bagbazar Street and Pashupati Bose Lane. Next year it was placed at Kantapukur and in 1927 it took place in the Bagbazar Kali-temple.
With time the Puja after locations shift transformed itself due to public demand as Baghbazar sarvajanin durgotsav from a baroari Durga Puja.
In 1926 with the remarkable effort of renowned social worker Nagendra Nath Ghoshal some of the erudite and other well-known people joined the organization and it took the shape of an proper organization. He is also the person who gave the name of the organization too.
The awareness & involvement of the people in the freedom fight increases. Baghbazar sarvajanin durgotsav couldn’t stay back. With encouragement of the alder-man of Calcutta Municipal Corporation Durgacharan Bandyopadhyay Baghbazar sarvajanin durgotsav transformed and renamed as Baghbazar sarvajanin durgotsav & exhibition.
For the required space to organize the exhibition he selected this very place where the Durganagar of today is situated. This place was known as Metal-Yard formerly, and it used to the storage of Calcutta Corporation's road-repair department.
Durgacharan Bandyopadhyay requested the Mayor of Calcutta Netaji Subhash Ch. Bose to allow organizing the Durga Puja with the exhibition at that located. With his permission Baghbazar sarvajanin durgotsav & exhibition on the year 1929 they organized an Swadeshi industrial Fair (exhibition) for the first time. This was the starting of their contribution & participation to the freedom fight.
It opened up the different door for Baghbazar sarvajanin. It attracted renowned personalities of that time to encourage Baghbazar sarvajanin durgotsav & exhibition for its efforts.
On the opening & Closing ceremony of 1930 renowned dignitaries like Santosh Kr. Basu, Netaji Subhash Ch. Bose, Acharya Prafulla Ch. Roy, Sir Harishankar Pal and others put that occasion to a different height.
The exhibited started with 2 thoughts , one is to have Swadesi Industrial fair, to sell the items and to make people more aware of current need.
Baghbazar sarvajanin durgotsav & exhibition still have this believe and give the stalls at throw away price to handlooms and other organization doing developing similar products.
In 1936 Netaji was present in the Birashtami Utsab and gave lecture and said that all people of our country need to start doing activities to Puja mother land with Devi Durga.
In 1938-1939 this organization was privileged by the active participation of Netaji Subhash Ch Bose as the president.
During the riot of 1946 the Baghbazar sarvajanin durgotsav & exhibition organized the Durga Puja but with lesser pomp & show, so they deducted the opening & closing ceremony in that year.
The specialty of Baghbazar sarvajanin durgotsav & exhibition Durga Puja is their believe on their tradition and the eagerness to hold on to their roots. They still have the same potter family who continues to create the idol of Devi Durga.
Nilanjan Pal started doing the idol of Devi Durga and later his sons kartick pal & sadhan pals hold on to the heritage of making the idol of Devi Durga.
The idol is decorated in the Daker Saaj and in the silver style. The same design is maintained with the idol.
Besides of Puja’s two more occasion that has given a different identity to this celebration over here are Birashtami Utsab in the morning of Mahastami and the Sindur-Utsab in the morning of Bijaya Dashami.
