HISTORY

The Hari Ghosh Street Sarbojanin Durgotsab Samity worship commenced against the background of a heated political ambience during the British regime.

In the history of Durga Puja in North Calcutta, the aristrocrat families and Rajbaris had their triumphant assertion. Community worships were regarded there as outcast. In consonance with worships held at the aristrocrat families organized by the so-called “Babu Communities” of British-Calcutta. Some eminent persons of the locality like Late Rajen Ghosh, Late Amal Sarkar , Late Baidyanath Da, Late Dr. Shudhanshu Banerjee , Sri Samir Sen and others convened a meeting in the month of November in the year 1939 and they decided to start their own Puja. At last in the year 1940 the first Durga Puja was started under the Presidentship of Late Shri Laxmi Kanta Mullick and the supervision of “O” Club (Zero Club).

In the mean time some organizers of Hari Ghosh Street Sarbojanin, got involved in the Quit India movement and the Non-violent movement conducted by Gandhiji. As a consequence they had to confront the stern measures of ruthless authorities. But the worship did not stop. Then Police administration put pressure on the organizers to cease the puja during the riot of 1946. Despite the pressure exerted by the ruler, the Hari Ghosh Street Sarbojanin Durgotsab Samity did not surrender. In the post Independence era Late Hirendra Nath Sarkar, the I.G of West Bengal Police was one of the Patrons of this Puja. Late Dinen Roy, Biswanath Paul, Lochan Mitra, Shasti charan Das, Shishir Mitra, Sitanath Paul, Dulal Basak, Harimohan Seal, Jagannath Paul etc took active part in this Puja.

CHRONOLOGY

2015 Theme : Maa aschen Ghorai chore
Chottobelar Khelar Ghore
This year the Goddess arrives on the horse-back. Who doesn't remember the fun rides on horse toys in their childhood playrooms. In this context, one can recall the various games that we loved to play as kids. Today, those playrooms have disappeared and so have those childhood days. If one tries to remember childhood games such as hop-scotch, catch me if you can( Kana machi vo vo), flying kites, playing with marble, danguli, snakes & ladders, chu-kit-kit etc would come to one’s mind. It was not like the video games, net surfing and smart phones to which children of the present generation are addicted too. The only form of the entertainment available to adolescents of our time was those childhood games. Sports and games help in fostering friendly relationships and preserving the mental health of the human beings. This is the reason that kids of the earlier generations never required any kind of psychiatric counseling. It is due to influence of globalization and modernization that all those. Childhood games are long lost and forgotten. Keeping in mind the memories of those long lost games, we have devised the concept of our 76th year as
"Maa aschen Ghorai chore
Chottobelar Khelar Ghore"

. Our Rupakar ( artist) concentrates on reflecting through his thought and imagination the ambience of those by gone childhood days with the resonance of forgotten childhood games.
