Calcutta Youth Choir
Calcutta Youth Choir was started in 1958 by Ruma Guha Thakurta with Salil Chowdhury and Satyajit Ray who was then its President. With its very first show in the NEW EMPIRES in the very next year, there was no looking back and the Choir has earned several laurels and been awarded in many ways in the last 54 years. The Choir is famous in the country and abroad for the performance of FOLK SONGS & DANCES OF INDIA and for singing songs for National Uprising popularly categorised as MASS SONGS. The Choir sings in possibly most of the major languages in its folk and mass songs from regions of our great country, and traditional folk songs from North & South Americas, Africa and several other continents. It also completes its repertoire singing several songs composed by Atul Prasad Sen, Dwijendra Lal Roy, Rabindra Nath Tagore, Rajani Kanta Sen, Nazrul Islam, Swami Vivekananda, Prem Dhawan, Sukanta Bhattacharya, Nachiketa Ghosh, Sudhin Dasgupta, Salil Chowdhury, Ramanuj Dasgupta, Sibdas Banerjee and many others.

In July 1974 Calcutta Youth Choir went International with a 20-member Folk Song and Dance troupe that came back with the FIRST PRIZE at the Copenhagen Youth Festival under ‘folklore’ category.

The choir since inception has performed in over 50,000 performances all over the country and abroad as the leading group recognised by the Ministry of Culture & Education and The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting. It is graded high in All India Radio and Doordarshan in the genre of Folk Songs, Mass Songs and Dances of India. Being the main artist for Government functions in greeting foreign delegates, entertaining distinguished ambassadors and chief cultural events attended by renowned personalities. In 1990 the Choir performed the opening song to welcome Nelson Mandela in Kolkata where a civic reception was hosted by the then State Government.
The full strength of the choir consists of 50 individuals, when it performs in Kolkata comprising male and female vocalist&dancers, musicians, stage /sound / light technicians, dressers and managers. Smaller groups have performed with a curtailed repertoire wherever required for logistics reasons.

A covered stage for a performance with 15 singers and 10 dancers, 6 musicians and placement of lights and mikes stands along with adequate electric power supply, and two dressing rooms are basic infrastructure requirement for satisfactory performance of the group.
